Lawrence Wright: Mismatched Narratives on the War
September 11, 2010"We're pressed, but we're not going to be destroyed by Al-Qaeda. Only we can do that," says Lawrence Wright, author of The Looming Tower: Al-Qaeda and the Road to 9/11. The longtime journalist, screenwriter, playwright, and New Yorker staff writer has been combining his reporting with theater and film for some time now, and his most recent project, My Trip to Al-Qaeda, premieres on HBO September 11. This documentary, made with former GRITtv guest Alex Gibney, traces his journey in researching the terrorist group.Lawrence Wright, Return to El Salvador, and Nicholas Jahr

August 18, 2010A recent study revealed that physicians with the CIA's Office of Medical Services were more deeply involved in torture than was previously thought--that doctors and psychiatrists actually helped interrogators design "enhanced techniques" that passed the Bush administration's requirements but would keep prisoners alive and without the severe physical injuries that even that regime admitted were torture.Sonali Kolhatkar, Rethink Afghanistan, and Psychology of Torture
August 17, 2010The media face of the war in Afghanistan is a woman's face--one particular mutilated woman, in the case of Time. Sonali Kolhatkar of the Afghan Women's Mission notes, though, that this is a clear strategy from those who benefit from the war to win over European and American audiences. Meanwhile, Afghan women who oppose occupation, like former GRITtv guest Malalai Joya, are silenced in the media just as they are silenced in Afghan politics.Prophecy: The Human Cost of War
June 11, 2010We spoke this week about the actual cost of war as well as the toll it takes on those who participate in it. Now a new play at the East Fourth Street Theater in New York is focusing on the human toll that war takes, not just on those who fight it, but those back at home. Starring Kathleen Chalfant and Najla Said, Prophecy is written and directed by Karen Malpede, and explores the themes of transgression and forgiveness.Coal Free Future, Still Alive in Gaza, and Jim Shultz
June 5, 2010Frequent GRITtv guest Jeff Biggers has created the Coal Free Future Project, along with Stephanie Pistello, as a creative and artistic component to the growing climate justice movement, pushing for clean energy and human rights. As part of their project, they are presenting their multimedia theater project, "4 1/2 Hours: Across the Stones of Fire" at New York's Gene Frankel Theatre from June 4th to the 13th.GRITtv Goes to the Oscars!
March 5, 2010Well, not really. Instead, we invited three of our favorite film critics and pop culture queens to talk about the Academy Awards: will Kathryn Bigelow break the Best Director glass ceiling? Is Sandra Bullock going to take home a statuette? Was Avatar all that it was cracked up to be? And why was that Vanity Fair Hollywood issue cover so darn white? The Oscars, Daniel Ellsberg and Sweet Crude
March 4, 2010The Academy Awards are this weekend, so we invited three of our favorite film critics and pop culture queens to talk about the whole shebang: will Kathryn Bigelow break the Best Director glass ceiling? Is Sandra Bullock going to take home a statuette? Was Avatar all that it was cracked up to be? And why was that Vanity Fair Hollywood issue cover so darn white?Circus Amok: Taking it to the Streets
December 23, 2009Most people think of theater as something that happens on a stage, with seated people clapping politely. But Circus Amok take their brand of avant-garde political theater to the streets of New York, even when it's freezing outside.Health Care, Sarah Schulman, and Circus Amok
December 22, 2009The health care bill may have passed the Senate, but there's still heavy debate among progressives as to whether the bill is actual reform. Some of the arguments have gotten heated, personal, but they've also helped to take the framing of the issue away from the Republicans, who have steadfastly remained the Party of No. But the important question remains: without a public option, Medicare buy-in, or other cost-controlling measures, and with Stupak and Nelson holding women's rights for ransom, is there anything good left in this bill?
