It Gets Better: Faith Community Joins Movement for Hope
October 25, 2010Following a recent spate of well-publicized suicides by gay teenagers, Dan Savage, Savage Love syndicated columnist, started a YouTube channel recording videos to tell LGBT youth "It gets better." The first videos included messages from Savage and his partner, and now even President Obama has recorded a message for the project. The Loaded Chamber and It Gets Better
October 22, 2010"The chamber’s increasingly aggressive role — including record spending in the midterm elections that supports Republicans more than 90 percent of the time — has made it a target of critics, including a few local chamber affiliates who fear it has become too partisan and hard-nosed in its fund-raising."John Lewis, All Fracked Up and Stop the Bullying
October 8, 2010"We didn't have sponsors when we came to Washington in 1963. We didn't have sponsors when we marched from Selma to Montgomery in 1965. The young people that came to Mississippi in 1964, and three of my colleagues died, didn't have sponsors. We came out of the feeling that we wanted to redeem the soul of America."John Fugelsang: Stop Calling it Bullying
October 8, 2010Due to the recent wave of kids - especially gay teenagers - who've been bullied to the point of taking their own lives, the U.S. media's begun talking about bullying & teen suicide. It's so horrible that Americans have finally begun to do what we do best - fight with each other over what to do and never accomplish anything.Baratunde Thurston: News as Spectacle
October 7, 2010We keep hearing about the enthusiasm gap this election cycle--that Republicans, energized by the Tea Party, are ready to sweep into the polls and sweep out the Democratic majorities. Meanwhile the Obama administration seems perfectly willing to blame it all on their progressive critics--as if the economy wasn't actually bad, lefty bloggers are just making people think it's bad. Additionally, notes Baratunde Thurston, "Our politicians are assumed to be corrupt and not doing much to discourage that assumption."Baratunde Thurston, Rebecca Traister, and Anne Elizabeth Moore

October 1, 2010"You don't go to war without being changed by it," says Geoff Millard, former Chair of the Board of Iraq Veterans Against the War. From sky-high suicide rates for veterans at home to horrific stories of "kill teams" in Afghanistan, we're hearing stories every day of the traumas that going to war inflicts on our young men and women. Millard and IVAW, though, have been working both at home and back in Iraq to bring about some sort of reconciliation, both for soldiers and for Iraqi civilians.Geoff Millard, Mary Kay Henry, and Obama v. August 12, 2009Here’s something you may not know. The chairman of the joint-chiefs-of staff Mike Mullen has nearly 5,000 devoted followers on twitter. He sends out tweets about what he’s reading (“The Bookseller of Kabul”), whether Gen. McChrystal is asking for more troops (speculation he says), and the president’s latest podcast, which apparently raised the issue of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell (“When law changes, we’ll carry out the law,” he tweeted). The F Word: Living in Bush's Reality
January 14, 2009Bush's colleagues often talked about making reality: and contrasted themselves with the reality based community. As Bush leaves office he seems entirely out of touch with real life still.
