Chris Hedges, Honeywell Workers, and a special message from Laura
May 12, 2011"You can't sustain a democracy in an oligarchic state. The writers on Athenian democracy understood that 2000 years ago," says Chris Hedges, whose new book The World As It Is: Dispatches on the Myth of Human Progress explores the problems of a crumbling empire, inside and out.Locked-Out Steelworkers Bring Fight to Honeywell
May 12, 2011We first met the steelworkers from Metropolis, Illinois in Madison, Wisconsin early this spring, where workers from all over the country gathered to defend the right to collectively bargain. Until their lockout in June of last summer, these workers ran Honeywell's uranium conversion plant, the only one of its kind in the country, and they depended on their collectively bargaining rights to defend the health and safety of themselves and their small community.Leo Gerard: Time to Rethink Nuclear Power
March 18, 2011"Now we think not only us are going to have to review our sense of comfort. I am not very comfortable." says Leo Gerard, President of the United Steelworkers union. Gerard himself was once a union representative at a facility that mined and refined uranium, and he represents many workers in such dangerous conditions across the country today. The USW has long been part of the Blue-Green Alliance, creating a labor-environmentalist coalition, but stopped short of calling for an end to nuclear power--but will that change after Japan? Will Williams: Years of Struggle Lost
March 15, 2011"Too much has been spent on defense and killing at the expense of people, of working class people," Will Williams, of Veterans for Peace Madison, said to Laura. "And I say that because, when you look at the statistics, it costs one million dollars a year to keep one troop in Iraq. Yet we talk about we can't balance the budget unless we do it on the backs of working class people. And it's wrong."Lena Taylor: Awakening a Sleeping Giant
March 15, 2011"They've awakened a sleeping giant. People who have never been engaged are engaged," Lena Taylor, Wisconsin state representative, told Laura Flanders from the streets of Madison. "900 million dollars, almost a billion dollars, out of education. How can we be prepared for our future?"Leo Gerard: Steelworkers Stand with Wisconsin
February 27, 2011United Steelworkers International President Leo W. Gerard speaks to workers gathered in Madison, Wisconsin protesting Governor Scott Walker's attacks on union rights.Richard Trumka: Jobs, Jobs, and More Jobs
September 29, 2010Richard Trumka has a message for all the so-called progressives who don't actually look out for working people: "We can't be a world-class economy unless we make things." It's the key to rebuilding our infrastructure after years of neglect, after what he notes was "the party the rich had that we didn't get to go to," to helping to stabilize the climate and most importantly, to digging us out of the economic hole we're in. Creating jobs, green jobs, innovative manufacturing jobs, he argues, could solve all of that.
