St. Nicks Alliance: Restoring & Rebuilding in Brooklyn
August 13, 2010The St. Nicks Alliance Neighborhood Preservation Corp of North Brooklyn is putting a new spin on community development. They are repurposing and restoring the turn-of-the-century Greenpoint Hospital Buildings and have expanded their programs to include a 5000 square foot gallery space. The goal is to support and bring together the new and old residents of this changing neighborhood. Will it work? The current show is up until August 22nd and our field producer, Sarah Friedland, went to take a look.Whither Glenn Beck and Community Development in Brooklyn
August 13, 2010Glenn Beck might not have a lot of advertisers left, but he's got a lot of viewers still. And the Obama administration recently showed off just how terrified they are of the FOX News host by pressuring Shirley Sherrod to leave her position because of the threat of a video appearing on Beck's show. But Beck didn't start off as a journalist (or a demagogue). He came from much humbler beginnings.Hydrofracking for Natural Gas
July 22, 2010Hydraulic fracturing for natural gas in Pennsylvania and New York is a heated topic. Whose power? Whose water? And just how natural is natural gas anyway? On the search for cheap clean energy Natural Gas drililng has been sold as a solution. But is it? Affected communities are split. GRITtv's Sarah Friedland and Isabel Braverman went to the Delaware River Basin Commission's Headquarters in West Trenton, New Jersey to hear from residents, including actor Mark Ruffalo.Got Docs: The Rink
July 17, 2010Branch Brook Park roller rink, located in Newark, NJ, is one of the few remaining urban rinks of its kind. This concrete structure is nestled in the pit of a hill bordered by housing projects and a highway. Serving extremely diverse subcultures within Newark, this space is a microcosm of the city that surrounds it. This film will follow three characters from distinct groups that use the space; a Skate Dancer, a Gospel Skater, and a Roller Derby Girl. Despite their differences in race, class, religion, and sexuality, these skaters are united by the rink, which serves as a refuge from the stress of their lives.Jon Liss, The Rink and Harvey Pekar
July 16, 2010Lately, the infamous Tea Party has taken the mass media by storm. Despite this recent mobilization against long-awaited “liberal” reforms, we can’t help but remember how grassroots movements organized coalitions to paint red states blue and elect Barack Obama. Is it possible to remobilize progressive discontent and organize a party that crosses race, class, and labor lines to get progressive politicians elected?Humanizing Architecture
April 28, 2010SUPERFRONT is a gallery and space in Brooklyn, New York where architecture meets art, dance, sound, and more. Currently on display are the graphic-novel-like drawings of Jimenez Lai, who challenges his discipline to be more humanistic and experimental. GRITtv's Sarah Friedland visited the space and brought us this report.Melissa Harris-Lacewell, Lisa Shannon and Superfront
April 27, 2010Financial reform came up for a test vote this week in the Senate--and the Republican party (plus Ben Nelson) voted to filibuster the bill before even debating the subject. Will GOP political posturing continue to hold progress hostage? What's the point of being the Party of No, and will the Republicans' apparent decision to stick to that line finally push Obama to decide that there's no point in trying to win them over, and lead him to making progressive choices--for the Supreme Court, say?
