The Good Example
July 28, 2010The economy's still struggling, and millions of Americans are desperate for work. And there are some people who are stuck with an even harder time than most. "Have you ever been convicted of a felony?" If you have to check "yes" next to that question, you've probably just said "no" to a job. In Connecticut, a group of activists decided to challenge the question. Sam Alcoff and intern Rodolfo Piana went to visit and to hear their stories.Sarahi Uribe, Felons & Jobs, and War Funding
July 28, 2010In recent months, many have blamed, boycotted, and blasphemed Arizona for SB 1070. However, it is not all state law that is to blame. A few years ago, the United States Justice Department passed 287 G, a statute that puts immigration control in the hands of local police. Would SB 1070 be possible without these deeper, more established roots?Glassphemy: Creative Recycling
May 27, 2010Broken glass is a hazard of city living. It's everywhere. So when a meeting of architects and urban planners were trying to come up with uses for vacant lots around New York, one of their chief challenges was figuring out what to do with the glass. David Belt and his company Macro-Sea took a comment from an attendee at the meeting, Bethany Edwards, who suggested creating a place where people could go to break glass.Jose Vasquez, Glassphemy, and Tapped Out
May 26, 2010Last week, the war in Afghanistan hit a sad milestone: the 1000th American casualty. This Monday will be Memorial Day, when we stop to remember the soldiers who have given their lives in battle in the U.S.'s many wars. But there are many veterans from the wars still alive and struggling with the consequences of active duty every day, both physically and mentally.CAMBA: Defunding Our Cities' Kids
May 12, 2010The federal government keeps trying to tell us that things are looking up for the economy, but cities and states across the country are still struggling to meet budget requirements. One of the things on the chopping block here in New York City is after-school programs, which provide kids of working parents someplace to go, get help with homework, and stay off the streets. GRITtv's Sam Alcoff and Anna Gold visited one such program, CAMBA, in Brooklyn and brought us this report.Cathy Albisa, After-School Programs, and Joy Harjo
May 11, 2010President Obama got his second chance to nominate a Supreme Court justice not even a year after the first one with the retirement of John Paul Stevens, the Court's oldest member and its liberal backbone. He has nominated Elena Kagan, the current Solicitor General and the former Dean of Harvard Law School, but many progressives are unhappy with the choice, wishing that Obama had instead chosen a staunch liberal who would not run the risk of moving the Court to the right.Peter Kuper: The Art of Dissent
May 1, 2010The Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art held its annual festival recently, with independent comics artists from all over the world convening in New York to show off their work. Some are new on the scene, and others, like Peter Kuper, co-founder of World War 3 Illustrated, have been around for decades and have had work in such mainstream publications as The New York Times.Doormen in New York Fight for Recognition
April 27, 2010New York City braced last week for a strike by the doormen of the Service Employees International Union's local 32BJ. Late negotiations might have prevented the strike for now, but GRITtv was on the scene as the mobilization grew and we're happy to bring you this report on their struggle. A special thanks to Anna Gold and Zuhal Danyildiz for this report.Rinku Sen, Economic Recovery, and New York's Doormen
April 26, 2010Last Friday, Arizona Governor Jan Brewer signed into law the country's most repressive immigration bill, SB 1070, which criminalizes undocumented immigrants and gives police the authority to demand papers from anyone they suspect of being undocumented. Though Brewer, a Republican who took over from Janet Napolitano when she left to become Obama's Homeland Security secretary, claims that there are protections in the bill to prevent racial profiling, it's hard to imagine a way that officers will decide from whom to demand papers that won't involve the color of their skin or the language that they speak.Wafaa Bilal: "...and Counting"
March 20, 2010Continuing our coverage of the seventh anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Iraq, we bring you artist Wafaa Bilal. This Iraqi-American, who has lost family members in the conflict, garnered headlines around the world in 2007 when he lived in a gallery for 30 days with a webcam and a Web-controlled paintball gun: anyone around the world could try and shoot an Iraqi with a yellow paintball--and over 65,000 paintballs, from over 130 countries, were shot his way.
