Though, she notes, the history of her people is disappeared from discussions in the U.S.--or turned into cartoons and easy narratives--Harjo's work serves to highlight the humanity of all people.

Yet, Latin America is at a turning point where a series of socialist leaders have come to power. We continued our conversation with Ray Laforest concerning global redevelopment projects in Haiti. On Sunday, seven-year old Aiyana Jones was shot and killed during a failed murder investigation. What happens when the police accidently shoot and kill a seven-year old black girl and the media reaction is muted?
Joy Harjo: Poem for Lena Horne

Actress and activist Lena Horne passed away this week at the age of 92. She was memorialized around the U.S. and the world as a beloved entertainer, but some have noted her background in work with the NAACP and the Civil Rights movement--as John Nichols wrote at The Nation, "Such appearances earned Horne a reputation, she joked, as the 'bad little Red girl.'"

President Obama got his second chance to nominate a Supreme Court justice not even a year after the first one with the retirement of John Paul Stevens, the Court's oldest member and its liberal backbone. He has nominated Elena Kagan, the current Solicitor General and the former Dean of Harvard Law School, but many progressives are unhappy with the choice, wishing that Obama had instead chosen a staunch liberal who would not run the risk of moving the Court to the right.

The announcement this week that Barack Obama would open up space along the Atlantic coast for offshore oil drilling wasn't a cruel April Fool's joke, sadly. The president who pledged not to "drill, baby, drill" our way out of energy and climate issues seems to be going back on his word.
