Richard Falk: "Shameful Thing" in Gaza
June 1, 2010"My statement wasn't strong enough," says UN special rapporteur Richard Falk of his condemnation of the killings of humanitarian volunteers by Israeli commandoes on the "Freedom Flotilla" this Monday.Norman Finkelstein & Huwaida Arraf: Israel's Attack
June 1, 2010On Monday, Israeli commandoes boarded ships in the "Freedom Flotilla" attempting to bring humanitarian aid to residents of still-blockaded Gaza. The aggressive response by Israel turned deadly, with at least nine activists killed. The international community has reacted with shock and outrage; protests have erupted around the world outside Israeli embassies, with protesters even teargassed in Paris. Benjamin Netanyahu has cancelled a meeting with President Obama and headed back to Israel to do damage control, and Turkey, from where the flotilla departed, has recalled its ambassador and issued a travel warning to its citizens. The F Word: Anger over Israel Hurts U.S.
June 1, 2010After Israel's latest act of aggression, it's not just the Arab world that is outraged. And it's not just Israel they're outraged at.Richard Falk, Huwaida Arraf & Norman Finkelstein on the Freedom Flotilla

January 15, 2010International pressure is mounting on Israel to end the occupation. More than 1,000 filmmakers, actors, and writers recently called for a protest of the Toronto Film Festival’s spotlight on Tel-Aviv. You can read the Toronto Declaration here. Meanwhile an international boycott is growing. Neve Gordon, in a recent editorial, explains why it is time to boycott Israel.Week in Review: Micha Kurz on Grassroots Jerusalem
November 13, 2009Micha Kurz co-founded Breaking the Silence, an organization that collects stories from members of the Israel Defense Forces (compulsory in Israel for young men and women) who served in the occupied territories. Kurz served in the IDF during the second intifada, and his experiences led him to work against the occupation and treatment of Palestinians.Tear Down This Wall
November 11, 200920 years from the fall of the Berlin Wall, there are other walls in other parts of the world still keeping people separate and unequal. In Ni'ilin yesterday, Palestinian activists tore down a segment of the wall across the West Bank in protest of increasing Israeli settlements and in memory of the Germans who tore down the Berlin wall and helped bring a close to the Cold War.Compromise on Women's Backs, Sarah and Emily Kunstler, and the Middle East
November 10, 2009The health care bill passing the house with a public option should've been cause for celebration, but the Stupak-Pitts amendment came as a shock to many prochoice activists and writers. It's not a secret that "pro-lifers" would like to roll back the right to abortion at any chance they get, but most of us didn't think that we'd see a move like this supported by 64 Democrats.Micha Kurz: Soldiers and Silence in Israel
November 10, 2009Micha Kurz was an Israeli soldier during the second intifada, and when he left the military he co-founded Breaking the Silence, an organization that collects stories from members of the service (which is compulsory in Israel for young men and women) who served in the occupied territories. Breaking the Silence allows soldiers to confidentially speak out about the things they did and saw while in the military.Today's Veterans, Micha Kurz and Health Care
November 9, 2009Veterans Day is this week, and the shootings at Fort Hood this week brought to the forefront many questions about soldiers and military personnel: how are soldiers surviving the wars, and readjusting to life at home? What are we doing to help them, and is it enough? With the war in Iraq supposedly winding down and the war in Afghanistan ratcheting up, it's time to take a serious look at some of these questions, and try to understand the role that the military plays in all of our lives.
