Last week a group of San Francisco students and educators turned out to protest Governor Jerry Brown's cuts. These may be some of the youngest movement leaders we've seen to date. The Supreme Court heard oral arguments from both sides on whether a class-action lawsuit that pits female employees since 1998 against the corporate giant Walmart will be permitted.

"Democrats are more concerned with raising money than raising hell," says Jamie Court, author of The Progressive's Guide to Raising Hell. Meanwhile, he argues, ballot measures in California were victories for populism, for campaigns against big oil and big corporate money (and self-financed billionaire candidates). With Republicans back in control of the house, Court says, Democrats are going to have to learn something from California.

Let the punishment fit the crime, they say. Well, we now know the punishment for the BART officer who shot Oscar Grant: 2 years and time served. He could actually be out of prison in seven months—for killing a man. His involuntary manslaughter charge normally carries a four-year sentence, and could have included California's “gun enhancement,” which would've raised his sentence to 14 years. Instead, his short sentence has been decried as less than Michael Vick was given for killing dogs.

Last week, a jury in Oakland ruled that the shooting death of Oscar Grant was involuntary manslaughter: Johannes Mehserle, the Bay Area Rapid Transit officer who shot Grant, they decided, was reaching for his taser, not his gun and did not mean to kill the young African-American man. But the statistics on police shootings of young men of color tell a different story: this happens too often to be an accident.

We have a problem around talking about race in this country, says Maya Wiley of the Center for Social Inclusion. There are those on the right who would shut down any discussion of racial issues, instead claiming that mentioning race at all makes the mentioner the racist. Whether the subject is a jobs bill or a Tea Party rally sign, a mention of race is all it takes to cut off all possibility of productive conversation.

Our biological clock is ticking, and it’s ticking fast. Global temperature averages have risen by ten degrees, eliminating many species and drying up necessary water resources. When natural ecology changes, human ecology changes; while we might not have an apocalyptic Day After Tomorrow scenario, it may be a slow and more painful series of wars, refugees, and failed states brought on by slowing food production.

Former BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) police officer Johannes Mehserle, who shot 22-year-old Oscar Grant in the back while he was handcuffed, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter on July 8. Involuntary manslaughter, for a police officer killing an African-American man who was already in custody. Yet some were surprised that he was convicted of anything at all, given the history of police shootings of men of color.

The focus during the unemployment crisis has been largely on those who have lost their jobs, but students and first-time job seekers have been hit hard as well. Viany Orozco of Demos points out that for those who enter the workforce for the first time during a recession, the wage hit can last for many years down the road.
