The Triangle Shirtwaist Fire was 100 years ago this week, and while labor groups and historians commemorate the deaths of 146 workers from unsafe working conditions, around the country conservatives are trying to erase all those years of labor history. The latest, in Maine, is that a Republican governor wants to have a mural at the state labor department painted over; its depiction of Maine's labor history, including the first woman labor secretary Frances Perkins, has been deemed too "one-sided."

Hunger Striking for Migrants' Rights in Greece

Have you seen much news from Greece lately? As Brandon Jourdan reports, 300 migrants there, mostly from North Africa, are on hunger strike for their right to remain in the country. As of press time they were on their 37th day and at least 59 of them have been hospitalized --they have pledged to die for their cause if that's what it takes.

Maria and fellow Puerto Rican artist Lah Tere were in Puerto Rico when protests began last year--protests that have seen students and workers in the streets over budget cuts and tuition hikes, seen peaceful demonstrators teargassed by police. Protests as dramatic as anything in the UK, Egypt, Tunisia, or Wisconsin--yet almost never seen on US news despite taking place in the US.

Immigrants rights activist Salvador Reza wasn't as shocked as the rest of us when he heard that Gabrielle Giffords and several other people had been shot in Tucson, Arizona. He's used to what he calls the "climate of hate" in Arizona lately, especially around immigration and children of immigrants. From Sheriff Joe Arpaio and the Minutemen to State Senator Russell Pearce and bills that demonize immigrants while loosening gun regulations, Reza notes, Arizona has been building its reputation as a state on the brink.
Amanda Terkel: Violent Rhetoric and Gabrielle Giffords

"On the eve of the shooting that left her critically injured, Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) wrote an email to Kentucky Secretary of State Trey Grayson (R), asking his help in toning down the partisan rhetoric in the country." Amanda Terkel reported that Giffords had been asking for help, as one of the few Democrats and the only woman remaining in a Republican district, toning down the anger and violence running through much of political discourse.
