Thomas Frank: Voting to Make Problems Worse
November 4, 2010"If there was ever a case of voting for something that is going to make the problem worse, this is it," says Thomas Frank of the 2010 midterms. We've gone from voting for Democrats to fix the economy to kicking them out in favor of Republicans calling for more of the policies that created the crisis: deregulation, tax cuts, and nebulously-defined "freedom." With those people in charge of the House, what's going to happen next?Thomas Frank, Midterm Election Recap, and Lessons Learned
November 3, 2010"If there was ever a case of voting for something that is going to make the problem worse, this is it," says Thomas Frank of the 2010 midterms. November 3, 2010Which lesson will Obama take from sweeping midterm losses? The mantra from the media is move right, conciliate, bridge build. But that’s the rotten road that brought the Democrats this far. There are other voices to listen to.John Nichols: Pledge to America
September 28, 2010The Republicans like to go back to old playbooks, it seems--this time they're remembering 1994's "Contract with America" with the "Pledge to America." But, John Nichols notes, it's just the same old policies with a fancy new cover. Nichols stopped by the GRITtv studio recently to record this commentary.Betsy Reed & Rebecca Traister, Eric Foner, and John Nichols
September 27, 2010Sarah Palin has declared that the "mama Grizzlies" are taking over the Republican party, and newspapers have seized on the meme of Republican women as if they're an undiscovered species. But is there anything new about this year's crop of conservative female candidates, and is there something the Democrats aren't grabbing, an opportunity missed? The F Word: Remembering Marilyn Clement
August 4, 2009Organizer and activist Marilyn Clement has died at the age of 74 after a battle with cancer. Over five tireless decades, she held positions with just about every key civil rights and peace group from the Southern Christian Leadership conference to the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom and the Center for Constitutional Rights. "Let’s hope the Democratic Congress gets the message," she wrote in January 2007. "The voters did indeed vote for a national response to the health care crisis. They desperately need it. The Democrats must get over the chilling effect of the Newt Gingrich attack that left them trembling in their boots."
