Phyllis Bennis: The US and Egypt: Our Role in the Uprising
February 1, 2011"Who do you think you are, telling Egyptians what they should be doing?" Phyllis Bennis would like to ask Hillary Clinton. The Obama administration has made some good steps in its policy toward the ongoing uprising in Egypt, she notes, mentioning a willingness to rethink military aid and calling the Egyptian people's demands legitimate. But Phyllis calls for the US to go further in its support and actually stop funding the military and police in Egypt--currently the second largest recipient of US foreign aid, after Israel.Philip Rizk: Everyday Egyptians Protesting in Cairo
February 1, 2011"People are sick and tired of the way things have been for the past 30 years," says Philip Rizk, a blogger and filmmaker based in Cairo. In 2009, Philip was detained by state security after taking part in a protest in support of Gaza, and so has intimate awareness of the control and terror inflicted by the state on its people--who are only escalating, with a general strike called for today and a "Million March" for Tuesday.Philip Rizk, Phyllis Bennis, Uncloaking Koch & Inequality

From the soybean plantations of Brazil to the tin mines of Bolivia, Latin America has experienced 500 years of several angles of exploitation and repression. Yet, Latin America is at a turning point where a series of socialist leaders have come to power. We continued our conversation with Ray Laforest concerning global redevelopment projects in Haiti. On Sunday, seven-year old Aiyana Jones was shot and killed during a failed murder investigation. What happens when the police accidently shoot and kill a seven-year old black girl and the media reaction is muted? How Much More Can Haiti Take?
January 27, 2010Another aftershock hit Haiti this morning, this one of magnitude 6.1. The devastation from the original quake is nowhere close to being contained, and sustained hits make it even harder to regain some sort of order in the country. How Much More Can Haiti Take?

January 20, 2010Scott Brown, a Republican with tea party support, won the special election for the last two years of Ted Kennedy's Senate term last night over Democrat Martha Coakley. Predictably, the blame game has already started, with critiques leveled at everyone from Coakley herself to the President.
