Maya Wiley, Oscar Grant Verdict, and Don't Ask Don't Tell
July 13, 2010We have a problem around talking about race in this country, says Maya Wiley of the Center for Social Inclusion. There are those on the right who would shut down any discussion of racial issues, instead claiming that mentioning race at all makes the mentioner the racist. Whether the subject is a jobs bill or a Tea Party rally sign, a mention of race is all it takes to cut off all possibility of productive conversation. The F Word: Do Ask, Don't Tell
July 13, 2010The White House has pulled quite a bait and switch on the LGBT community. LGBT voters came out and contributed en masse to Barack Obama's camapign. A year ago, they were promised action on, among other things, repeal of the military's discrimination policy, Don't ask Don't Tell. This May it seemed they'd won. To much ballyhoo, on the eve of a war appropriation vote, the White House announced what sounded like that action.Oliver Stone & Tariq Ali, the US Social Forum, and Samhita Mukhopadhyay
June 25, 2010Latin America has seen rapid changes over recent years, most significantly with the rise of left-leaning leaders who are willing to fight massive corporations and even stand up to the massive presence of the US in their countries. June 25, 2010Two weeks ago Nikki Haley won 49% of the vote for the Republican gubernatorial primary in South Carolina. If she wins she will be joining Bobby Jindal as another Republican South Asian American leader in a Southern state. Does this mean Republicans are better at accepting South Asians?Chloe Angyal: Ugly Truth About Women and Beauty
June 18, 2010A recent study at East Tennessee State University found that if you want to get women to stop using tanning beds, warning them about the risk of skin cancer isn’t nearly as effective as warning them about the risk of age spots and other forms of damage to their appearance. The study found that this warning – that tanning might make you less beautiful – was effective even on women who were addicted to tanning, or who were tanning to counteract depression.Restrepo, the UXO Tour, and Chloe Angyal
June 18, 2010Afghanistan is now the longest war in United States history. Soldiers are deported everyday, institutionalized to fight the elusive “war in Afghanistan.” Civilians and villagers are caught between the Taliban and the United States. Often, soldiers are too busy trying to survive to ask the metaphysically political questions like, “why are we here?”
