Maya Wiley, Oscar Grant Verdict, and Don't Ask Don't Tell
July 13, 2010We have a problem around talking about race in this country, says Maya Wiley of the Center for Social Inclusion. There are those on the right who would shut down any discussion of racial issues, instead claiming that mentioning race at all makes the mentioner the racist. Whether the subject is a jobs bill or a Tea Party rally sign, a mention of race is all it takes to cut off all possibility of productive conversation. The F Word: Do Ask, Don't Tell
July 13, 2010The White House has pulled quite a bait and switch on the LGBT community. LGBT voters came out and contributed en masse to Barack Obama's camapign. A year ago, they were promised action on, among other things, repeal of the military's discrimination policy, Don't ask Don't Tell. This May it seemed they'd won. To much ballyhoo, on the eve of a war appropriation vote, the White House announced what sounded like that action.Pushing Harder Against Don't Ask Don't Tell
April 22, 2010This week in front of the White House, uniformed members of the United States Armed Services were arrested for handcuffing themselves to the fence in a call for the repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell. President Obama has promised to overturn the Clinton-era rule, but so far hasn't done it. The action, along with another action this week demanding a swift vote on the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, were coordinated by GetEQUAL, and are part of what may be a new wave of direct action targeting Obama and Democrats.Dean Baker, Don't Ask Don't Tell, and the SEC
April 21, 2010Matt Taibbi called Goldman Sachs a "giant vampire squid," and it appears that they've finally overstepped their bounds. The Securities and Exchange Commission has filed charges against Goldman, accusing it of "Fraud in Structuring and Marketing of CDO Tied to Subprime Mortgages."
