Projection-Bombing the Maine Labor Mural
April 16, 2011The Tea Party governor of Maine ordered a labor mural removed from the state's Department of Labor--and a controversy ensued that even involved the federal labor department, who contributed funds to the mural. Protesters have continued to fight to get the mural reinstated, but a group of artists made their protest a little more creative, projecting photos of the mural on the side of the capitol.Armadillo, Moby, Maine Labor Mural and Nancy Goldstein
April 15, 2011"I think it's an identity project that's been given to you, you can go out there and play the hero in the big scene, inscribe yourself in this political rhetoric about the situation," says Janus Metz, who went with a team of Danish soldiers to Afghanistan to make his documentary, Armadillo.Rep. Cory Mason: Beating Walker's Budget
March 3, 2011Last Saturday, with the backdrop of 100,000 protestors, Laura caught up once again with Wisconsin State Assembly member Cory Mason in the Wisconsin State Capitol Building. They spoke about the dirty trick played on House Assembly members last Friday and Cory predicts the massive cuts to education and health care contained in Walker's state budget.Sen. Lena Taylor, Karen Nussbaum, Cory Mason, and Banksters
March 2, 2011"I have received nothing but overwhelming support from my constituents, saying 'We love you but don't come home,'" says Lena Taylor, one of the fourteen Wisconsin state senators who left the state in order to delay a vote on Governor Scott Walker's "budget repair" bill, that would eliminate collective bargaining for state employees.Michael Moore, Peg Lautenschlager, and John Nichols
February 28, 2011"This is a movement that is not going to stop," says filmmaker Michael Moore of the uprising in Madison, Wisconsin (and across the country--all 50 states held solidarity rallies this weekend). "I knew sooner or later people would say they've had enough."John Nichols: Wisconsin Capitol is the People's House
February 28, 2011It's been more than two weeks since protesters in Madison, Wisconsin have occupied the capitol building, and John Nichols notes that what's going on there is uniquely Wisconsin--from the politeness to the support and solidarity for union workers. He spoke to Laura outside the capitol this weekend, as protesters lined up in the freezing cold to get back into the building.GRITtv Special: Workers Protest in Columbus, Ohio & Madison, Wisconsin
February 23, 2011Welcome to the third day of our special coverage from the workers' protests across the country. Today's show features Columbus, Ohio as well as Madison, Wisconsin. Thanks again to our friends at The Uptake, Free Speech TV, and WORT FM in Madison for making this collaboration happen, and a special thanks to the Rev. Jesse Jackson for bringing us to Columbus with him! As thousands protest Ohio governor John Kasich's plan to gut public workers' collective bargaining rights, Brian Rothenberg of ProgressOhio notes that the election that put Kasich in charge was the result of a lot of people staying home out of frustration, and that those same people have been awakened by the moves of the new administration.Nickie Antonio: Ohio's Fight for Workers
February 23, 2011"I think we've been inspired by Madison; I think we've been inspired by Egypt, frankly," says Ohio state representative Nickie Antonio from the state house in Columbus, where thousands of protesters were locked out yesterday when they attempted to protest Governor John Kasich's legislation to end their collective bargaining rights.Mahlon Mitchell: Thrown Into the Fire in Wisconsin
February 22, 2011"When firefighters see an emergency, we respond," says Mahlon Mitchell, the new president of the firefighters' union in Wisconsin. Scott Walker left the firefighters and the police out of his drastic cuts to union employees' rights, but the firefighters have been rallying in solidarity with the rest of the public employees all week. "It's not a movement, it's a way of life. It's not just a union way of life, it's letting them know that labor is important," Mitchell notes.GRITtv Special from Madison, Wisconsin
February 21, 2011Welcome to our first special one-hour episode from Madison, Wisconsin! Thanks to our friends at The Uptake, Free Speech TV, and WORT TV in Madison for making this collaboration happen. "Unions realize that this is a threat to their very existence," says Matt Rothschild, editor of The Progressive, of Scott Walker's attempt to strip collective bargaining rights from public workers. And some of the usual suspects are behind Walker's attack--from the Koch brothers to Republican ideologues. "These corporations want to get these people off the playing field," says John Nichols, of The Nation.
