Student Organizing in the Age of Obama
September 1, 2010The current stage of the recession sees state budgets hitting crisis points around the country, and one of the areas targeted for cuts has been state univerisities. Students, already dealing with prohibitive levels of debt, have been coming together to protest tuition hikes and budget cuts, in some of the largest student protests since the 1960s.Jan Schakowsky, Green Jobs, and Student Activism
August 31, 2010Recently at Netroots Nation, Laura sat down with Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, who's been a leader in the fight against the use of private contractors like Blackwater in war zones (and at home). Our friends at the UpTake captured this video for us, as she spoke with Laura about jobs, the economy, military contractors, and the war in Afghanistan--especially the role of women in the conflict there.Lawrence Lessig: If You Want Change, Change Congress
February 9, 2010President Obama promised change in Washington, but one year in we've got nothing but gridlock. Professor Lawrence Lessig has known Obama for years, and in this video from our friends at The Nation, Lessig calls on Obama--and all of us--to push for real change: change in Congress. We'll be discussing this issue with Lessig and others on the show soon!Legalizing Marijuana, Dr. Gabor Mate, and Ukraine
February 8, 2010An initiative in California for marijuana legalization is slowly moving toward an appearance on the November ballot, and several other states have taken steps to legalize the drug for medical purposes, or to decriminalize possession, reducing it to a misdemeanor charge. Since the start of the economic crisis, many--including the venerable Economist magazine--have called for legalization and taxing in order to boost revenues.
