The F Word: Learning From Health Care Reform
March 23, 2010So this is what I learned from the last weekend of the health care reform debate.Health Care, Gary Younge, and Protesting Iraq
March 22, 2010The House of Representatives, under Speaker Nancy Pelosi, passed historic health care reform late Sunday night. That's a fact. Also a fact is that the bill is far from perfect, and legislators from all sides will be working to shape the bill more to their liking. Progressives regret the lack of a public option, let alone single payer, and the use of women's reproductive choice as a political football in the negotiations--Obama was forced into an executive order reaffirming the Hyde Amendment's commitment not to use federal dollars for abortions.Consumer Reforms at Risk in Senate
January 12, 2010Last month, the House passed a watered-down version of a financial overhaul that included a new consumer protection agency. But the bill has to make its way through the meat grinder of the Senate, where according to Barney Frank, who shepherded it through the House,it stands a very good chance of being gutted further. Thanks to the Huffington Post Investigative Fund for the video.Transgender Equality, El Salvador, and Gaza
January 11, 2010Barack Obama made the first transgender political appointments that we know of recently--Amanda Simpson, appointed last week as senior technical adviser in the Bureau of Industry and Security in the Commerce Department, and Dylan Orr, special assistant to Assistant Secretary of Labor Kathleen Martinez in the Office of Disability Employment Policy at the Department of Labor--but even David Letterman couldn't resist making a crack at Simpson's expense.Weekly Audit: Too Big to Fail is Just Too Big
November 3, 2009Last week, President Barack Obama released key legislation designed to fight the banking industry's too-big-to-fail problem. But Obama's plan doesn't actually address too-big-to-fail at all. It reinforces a broken system in which economically dangerous companies are bailed out whenever they drive themselves to the brink of failure. The F Word: $1.4 Million a Day Will Keep the Doctor Away
July 6, 2009With popular fury at the status quo rising and hunger for a real, public option attracting over 70 percent approval in polls, the White House is urging public option advocates to hush.
