Sarahi Uribe, Felons & Jobs, and War Funding
July 28, 2010In recent months, many have blamed, boycotted, and blasphemed Arizona for SB 1070. However, it is not all state law that is to blame. A few years ago, the United States Justice Department passed 287 G, a statute that puts immigration control in the hands of local police. Would SB 1070 be possible without these deeper, more established roots? The F Word: Funding War, Choosing Sides
July 28, 2010Coming on the eve of another war funding vote, many wondered if the the memos leaked by Wikileaks on the details of the Afghanistan deployment might make a difference. At the first test, the answer appears to have been no. The House approved $33 billion for a 30,000-troop escalation in Afghanistan this week and in doing so took money away from other places it was desperately needed: public schools, green energy and job creation, the lot. 60 percent of Democrats and 93 percent of Republicans think increasing the deficit is just fine when it comes to war.Collateral Murder
April 7, 2010On Monday, the independent site Wikileaks.org released a video of a shooting in Iraq that had been covered up for years. Among the victims of the U.S. soldiers in an Apache helicopter were two children and a Reuters photographer, whose telephoto lens was apparently taken for a weapon. We bring you a selection from the video. The F Word: Impossible to Ignore Wikileaks Tape
April 6, 2010"Well, it's their fault bringing their kids to a battle." Those words, spoken by a faceless soldier, echo from a classified US military video released by the site Wikileaks.org. The release comes on the heels of the revelation of a cover-up in Afghanistan—and the anniversary of the death of Dr. Martin Luther King, as well as the anniversary of his “Beyond Vietnam” speech.Safe Jobs, Anne Elizabeth Moore, and the Wikileaks Tape
April 6, 2010The coal mine in West Virginia where an explosion killed 25 workers on Monday and left four missing "had amassed scores of citations from mining safety officials," according to ABC News. Amidst all the talk of jobs and unemployment, Ed Ott notes, we've lost focus on the "good" and "safe" jobs part of the equation, let alone "well-paid."Rebooting the System, Jay Rosen, and UC Protests
December 1, 2009President Obama is about to announce a troop escalation in Afghanistan. Though it's consistent with his campaign promises, public opinion has shifted and now, according to most polls, a majority of the American people oppose the war. Politics as usual? Is he stuck? Is there a way around the machine to create a true politics of the people? The F Word: "Serious" Discussion of Afghanistan
December 1, 2009Fareed Zakaria, giving voice to the Beltway consensus, said: “It is time to get real about Afghanistan. Withdrawal is not a serious option.” Does this mean that 51 to 53% of the American people simply aren't “serious”? The “Church of the Savvy,” as today's guest Jay Rosen calls them, clearly think so.Silence on Afghanistan: If Only It Were a Joke
April 1, 2009I wish I could say APRIL FOOLS. But I can't. Looking at the history of Afghanistan, I'd have to say, the joke, such as it is, is on us.Closing the Polls on Peace
February 15, 2009Peace isn’t having a good week in the Middle East. Bombs continued to drop on Gaza and right wing fanatics made fast paced gains in Israel’s Knesset. Avigdor Lieberman’s extremist party, Yisrael Beiteinu, picked up 15 seats in the February 10 election (nearly one fourth of the seats needed for a coalition government), even beating out the so-called moderate Labor party, which picked up 14 seats.
