Mooz-lum: Qasim 'Q' Basir and Roger Guenveur Smith
September 18, 2010Mooz-lum is a new film, directed by Qasim 'Q' Basir and starring Evan Ross, Nia Long, Danny Glover, Roger Guenveur Smith, Summer Bishil and Dorian Missick. Focused on the story of one Muslim family living in the U.S., it illuminates not only the usual coming-of-age issues, the struggle of parents and children to understand one another, but the unique struggle of a Muslim family to retain their identity in a country where fear and hatred for their religion is increasingly commonplace.Mooz-lum and An Interview with Simone Weil

September 14, 2010"We have to build that independent left. It has to be so strong and so radical and so militant and so powerful that it becomes irresistible." Who better to say such a thing than Naomi Klein, Nation columnist, author of The Shock Doctrine and No Logo, and longtime rabblerouser?Melissa Harris-Lacewell, Naomi Klein, and Invisible People
September 13, 2010"We need to be covering the left as much as we cover, with anxiety, the right," notes Nation contributor and Princeton professor Melissa Harris-Lacewell. The lack of coverage of progressive movements, protests, and actions in the face of a loud, angry and well-funded right wing can be disheartening, but we know they are out there, and in some cases fighting hard to keep a Tea Party backed Republican party from taking back seats in Congress during the midterms.Climate Change, Foreclosure in Detroit, and Oscar Grant
July 9, 2010Our biological clock is ticking, and it’s ticking fast. Global temperature averages have risen by ten degrees, eliminating many species and drying up necessary water resources. When natural ecology changes, human ecology changes; while we might not have an apocalyptic Day After Tomorrow scenario, it may be a slow and more painful series of wars, refugees, and failed states brought on by slowing food production.Davey D: (No) Justice for Oscar Grant
July 9, 2010Former BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) police officer Johannes Mehserle, who shot 22-year-old Oscar Grant in the back while he was handcuffed, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter on July 8. Involuntary manslaughter, for a police officer killing an African-American man who was already in custody. Yet some were surprised that he was convicted of anything at all, given the history of police shootings of men of color.
