Kathy Kelly: Contradictions on the Ground in Afghanistan
November 11, 2010“We're all veterans of a war against the poor in the United States. We have a tremendous opportunity to have a vocation as peacemakers," says Kathy Kelly, a veteran peacemaker herself. Recently returned from another trip to Afghanistan where she spoke to everyday citizens, including men and women, Kelly notes that the average person on the ground there has little awareness of the September 11 attacks, despite the rationale for the U.S. occupation.Kathy Kelly, Priests for Life, and Women in the Military

October 7, 2010The controversy over home foreclosures is spreading--today, the White House blog and twitter announced that President Obama would not sign a bill that could have an impact on foreclosure documents because of the ongoing problems. In a nutshell, huge numbers of Americans have found themselves foreclosed on by banks that had faulty or incomplete documents. Three major firms have actually declared freezes on foreclosures, and Congress is calling for an investigation. The F Word: Losing the War's Beginning
October 7, 2010The ninth year of the US war in Afghanistan began with an apology. “We deeply regret this tragic loss of life and will continue to work. . . to ensure this doesn’t happen again.” The apology wasn't to the people of Afghanistan, for invading back in 2001. Or for the loss of civilian life in reprisal for civilian loss of life, on American soil for which no Afghans were responsible.Mooz-lum: Qasim 'Q' Basir and Roger Guenveur Smith
September 18, 2010Mooz-lum is a new film, directed by Qasim 'Q' Basir and starring Evan Ross, Nia Long, Danny Glover, Roger Guenveur Smith, Summer Bishil and Dorian Missick. Focused on the story of one Muslim family living in the U.S., it illuminates not only the usual coming-of-age issues, the struggle of parents and children to understand one another, but the unique struggle of a Muslim family to retain their identity in a country where fear and hatred for their religion is increasingly commonplace.Mooz-lum and An Interview with Simone Weil

September 11, 2010"We're pressed, but we're not going to be destroyed by Al-Qaeda. Only we can do that," says Lawrence Wright, author of The Looming Tower: Al-Qaeda and the Road to 9/11. The longtime journalist, screenwriter, playwright, and New Yorker staff writer has been combining his reporting with theater and film for some time now, and his most recent project, My Trip to Al-Qaeda, premieres on HBO September 11. This documentary, made with former GRITtv guest Alex Gibney, traces his journey in researching the terrorist group.Lawrence Wright, Return to El Salvador, and Nicholas Jahr

September 10, 2010It's the ninth anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon this weekend, and while one war has ostensibly been wound up, another still rages--and inside the U.S., the culture wars have reached a fever pitch, with Islamophobic ugliness centering on the anniversary seemingly everywhere. From a pastor in Florida threatening to burn Qurans on Saturday (and terror alerts being issued because of his actions) to the ongoing media arguments over the Cordoba House community center, American Muslims feel threatened, and the outreach to the larger Islamic world is threatened.Greg Grandin, Islamophobia and 9/11, and Pentagon PR
September 9, 2010September 11 is not only an infamous date in the U.S.--in Chile, it marks the anniversary of the coup that overthrew Salvador Allende. This year, 33 miners will spend that anniversary trapped underground, and Greg Grandin notes that Chile is seeing what amounts to the "Shock doctrine with a human face" under its current regime--deregulation leading to safety issues like that in the mine. Meanwhile, Mexico continues to see ever-escalating violence from drug cartels, and the U.S. State Department is now calling it an "insurgency."
