Lisa Shannon literally had her life changed by an Oprah show. She watched a program about the suffering of women in Congo and was inspired to do something. But each step wasn't enough--sending money, organizing a Run for Congo Women, getting in touch with other runners, even traveling to Congo to meet the women she was helping.
Her new book, A Thousand Sisters: My Journey into the Worst Place on Earth to Be a Woman, details her transition from affluent businesswoman to dedicated activist in a global movement, and she joins Laura in studio to talk about Congo and what all of us can do to help.

Need to really dig into the whys and wherefores of these well planned and timed attacks. It only takes a few well planned by Thugs and Dictators to unleash generations of useful hate and violence. Deracinating families is an important part of setting up a capitalist resource extraction based economy.
Destroying family lineage in traditional societies is an important part of disenfranchising populations and turning them into urban working slaves forever, hardly paid by our capitalist machine putting their superconductive metals into all our i-pods, i-pads, blackberries, and cell phones.
They become generations of formerly now dependent on the mines, their owners, and the Dictators who get paid off by our Corporate goons for all the trade. Our name brands have arms length because their manufacturing vendors are conveniently no names in China.
Our CIA may actually be deployed to make sure this whole system stays in place to keep the micro-chips coming. Documentary films seem to say our CIA operatives think protecting corporate global capitalism is their main job. We need to look carefully at double-speak and non-action from State Department and these other “security” and “intelligence” agencies.
This kind of nasty social history is well covered by Adam Smith in 1700s, and he had about 200 years of data observed when capitalism took root in Europe. Families selling their daughters to inn keepers as sex workers was common place in Europe back then too.
